SAFE-door Industries Ltd, the UK-based design and manufacture house for special purpose Thermal Separation doors, have installed a number of high-speed temperature-control doors from their Thermal Solutions product line at Birds Eye’s manufacturing and storage facility in Lowestoft, Suffolk.

This 3 dock loading bay in Birds Eye’s -22°C cold store was previously equipped with solid panel vertical lifting cold store doors to the dock shelters, and suffered from significant ice and snow build-up on the floor, walls and ceiling, as shown in the image above.

Following a competitive tendering process involving three rapid roll door manufacturers, Thermaster high speed freezer doors from SAFE-door Industries Ltd were selected by Birds Eye as part of a major upgrade project to their Lowestoft facility (pictured right).

The Thermaster twin curtain rapid rise freezer door opens and closes at up to two metres per second and provides a highly efficient seal to all four sides of the opening. The air between the fabrics is conditioned to ensure that an effective thermal barrier is maintained between the two curtains, and therefore acts as the insulation separating the -22°C cold store from the ambient loading pod. In addition to this, a trace heating system is integrated into the door frame which ensures that the door structure is thermally broken and eliminates any possibility of ice build-up in the door legs or head.

Designed and manufactured at SAFE-door Industries Ltd’s UK headquarters in Brampton, Cumbria, the Thermaster has been developed to deliver low running costs and great energy savings. Installation of Thermaster cold store doors has seen clients benefit from improved store temperature control, reduced defrost frequencies and improved safety due to ice-free floors.

The Thermaster, as with the other high speed doors in the Thermal Solutions family, is compatible with a variety of activation methods, such as induction loops, remote control handsets, motion sensors and pull cords. The steel frame and canopy is polyester powder coated as standard in a wide range of RAL colours (with stainless steel finish options also available), and the curtains – available with or without vision panels – also come in a variety of colours to suit the client’s preference.

Since the initial batch of doors was installed, the Birds Eye engineering team were quickly impressed with the performance of the doors, and how they assisted with the clearance of ice and snow in the store.

Birds Eye have since ordered additional Thermaster and Thermaspeed doors for their raw production freezers and airlocks.

SAFE-door Industries Ltd offer a broad range of innovative door solutions to separate and contain ambient, chilled and frozen environments. Designed and manufactured in the United Kingdom, their doors can be found in distribution centres, cold storage facilities, food processing factories and pharmaceutical laboratories both in the UK and in an increasing number of overseas countries.

The Thermal Solutions rapid-roll family is headed by the Thermaster high-speed cold store doorway which, with its robust design, is engineered to last. The Thermachill rapid-rise door for chilled and food-processing applications shares the Thermaster’s robust drive legs and canopy, and benefits from a heavily insulated CFC-free curtain to ensure a high level of thermal efficiency.

The Thermaspeed high-speed fabric door completes the Thermal Solutions family, and new for 2018, shares the same sequential light guard safety system as the Thermachill and the Thermaster for additional peace of mind.
